R.I.P actor Roland Currum, on June 5, 2025, aged 93, who came to the fore in such films as the three-time-Academy Award winning drama, “Darling†(1973), in which he played Malcolm, Julie Christie’s travelling companion, co-starring Dirk Bogarde and Laurence Harvey.

On the small screen, he played Brian Pilbeam in the first series of the BBC sitcom “Terry and June†(The Pilbeams – Roland’s wife was played by Anita Graham, were Terry and June’s annoying neighbors until the Sprys moved in) and starred as Harold Perkins in the acclaimed BBC TV series “Big Jim and the Figaro Club†(1981).

A decade later, he played the gay expat Freddie Martin in the BBC soap opera “Eldorado†(1991- 93), set in the fictitious Spanish resort of Los Barcos, the series, created by Tony Holland, focused mainly on the British and their lives, loves and attempts to make a new life for themselves.

Born in London in 1932, he was educated at Brighton College and started his acting career with the Bognor Regis Repertory Theatre during the early 1950s, alongside his peers Rosemary Harris and Michael Hawkins. His London debut came later, in 1961 as Pedro in “The Challengingâ€, at the Royal Court Theatre, with Jeremy Brett and Mary Ure.

On film, he started out with a string of bit parts roles, including the Norman Wisdom comedy vehicle “Trouble in Store†(1953); “The Captain’s Table†(1959) with John Gregson and Peggy Cummins; and “Doctor in Love (1960), with Michael Craig and Leslie Phillips.

During the 1980s, he supported Maria Aitken and Ian Ogilvy in “Design for Living†(1982-83), at the Globe Theatre; and scored a hit as Frederick Fellows in “Noises Off†(1984-85), directed by Michael Blackmore, at the Savoy Theatre. He also had numerous roles for the RSC and National Theatre.

Long married to British actress Sheila Gish, they eventually split up in the 1980s. She later married actor/director Denis Lawson. Roland came out as gay in the early 1990s and retired from acting to focus his work as an author. He subsequently met his longtime companion, and they settled in Chiswick, London. His daughter, actress Lou Gish died in 2006. He is survived by his youngest daughter Kay.
