R.I.P old friend: Kathleen Hughes the film starlet who cut a fine figure when she arrived on the scene during the late 1940s, died in Los Angeles, California on May 19, 2025. She was 96.

A contemporary of Mamie Van Doren, Noreen Nash and Marilyn Monroe (the pair were firm friends) she found her feet in the 1953 cult sci-fi "It Came from Outer Space", Universal Studios first entry in to 3-D cinema. Whereas the female lead went to Barbara Rush, it was the shapely Kathleen who won the column inches and a legion of male fans.

We first met Kathleen in 2002, for the launch “Worth Exposing Hollywood”, an exhibition dedicated t the work of Hollywood’s first paparazzi photographer Frank Worth. Kathleen was a hoot!

She went on to play the lead in the Film Noir crime drama "The Glass Web", with Edward G. Robinson, was paired with Rock Hudson in "The Golden Blade" (both 1953), joined Marla English and Sara Shane in the crime thriller "Three Bad Sisters" (1956) and played in "Unwed Mother" (1958) about a country girl (Norma Moore) who moves to L.A, falls in love for a smooth-talking grifter, Don Bigelow (played Robert Vaughn), who gets her pregnant, then abandons her.

The niece of playwright F. Hugh Herbert, she was born Elizabeth Margaret von Gerkanin Hollywood on November 14, 1929, and was hooked on becoming a star from an early age. As a teen she modelled and studied acting at the Stella Adler School whilst treading the board at the Little Theater on Santa Monica Blvd.

Discovered there in 1948, she was signed to a seven-year contract to 20th-Century-Fox, starting out in the romantic comedy "Mother Is a Freshman" 1949) with Loretta Young. She supported Shirley Temple and Clifton Webb in "Mr. Belvedere Goes to College" (1949) and played Tracy Norman in "For Men Only"1952).

By the mid-1950s, with her film contract behind her, Kathleen moved into TV with guest roles in "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", "Perry Mason", "I Dream of Jeannie" and "M*A*S*H", as well as the odd film role, including "Revenge" (1990) with Kevin Costner.

Kathleen was widowed after 60 years of marriage to producer Stanley Rubin in 2014. She is survived by their four children.
