On September 8, 1985, the Minnesota Vikings hosted the defending Super Bowl champion 49ers in the season-opening weekend.

The Vikings were a mess, finishing 3-13 in 1984 under coach Les Steckel, who lasted only that one season due to his so-called "discipline” style. Steckel had replaced Bud Grant as Vikings coach.

The 49ers had beaten the Vikings in their previous 2 games by an aggregate score of 99-24. That included a 51-7 loss to SF in '84. Bud Grant would return to coach the Vikings after being that 1984 year away.

So...after the Vikings stunned the 49ers on 9/8/85, everyone was stunned. Afterwards, the News Media kept asking Viking players HOW they beat the 49ers, 28-21. I'm not sure which Viking player it was, but he said it all. To paraphrase him, he said, "I can answer that question with two words...Bud Grant.”

Sadly, Bud Grant died Friday. He was 95. Sadly also was how he was remembered for being the first NFL coach to lose four Super Bowls.

Instead, Grant should be remembered for several other things. Between Winnipeg (CFL) and the Vikings, he won 280 games. He won four Grey Cup titles while coaching Winnipeg. At the University of Minnesota, he won nine letters playing football, basketball and baseball. He played basketball for an NBA championship team, the 1950 then-Minneapolis Lakers.
