R.I.P: A very belated farewell to the American child actress Edna May Wonacott, who died in June 2022, aged 90, and is best known for her role as Ann Newton, the younger sister of the films lead, played by Teresa Wright in the 1943 physiological thriller “Shadow of a Doubt” (1943), also starring Joseph Cotten.
•
The film’s director, Alfred Hitchcock and producer Jack H. Skirball hand-picked the plucky nine-year-old when she was waiting at a bus stop. At that time, she had zero experience as an actress.
•
Born in Santa Rosa, California, in February 1932, where her father Earl worked as a grocer, she was just going about her day — showing her two cousins Shirley and Beverly Wonacott, of Bakersfield, around Santa Rosa on a Saturday morning — when Hitchcock rolled up and asked if she wanted to be an actress.
•
Word had gone around that movie people were in town, but the opportunity to be part of it couldn’t have been further from her mind.
•
The Fremont High School accepted his offer of a screen test and set off with her mother to Universal Studios whilst Earl managed a flock of customers to his grocery interested to know all about their local new celebrity.
•
Despite it all, success wasn’t to be. She supported Martha O’Driscoll and Noah Beery Jr. in two B-starrers, “Hi, Beautiful” (1944) and as Faith in the comedy western Under Western Skies (1945), set in the fictional town of Rim Rock, Arizona, with Dorothy Granger as Maybelle Watkins.
•
Her other film credits include “This Love of Ours”; as Delphine Ford in “The Bells of St. Mary’s” (also both 1945), starring Bing Crosby and Ingrid Bergman; played a Bobby-Soxer in “Sunny Side of the Street” and had a small bit in the George Cukor directed comedy “The Model and the Marriage Broker” (both 1951), starring Jeanne Crain, Scott Brady, and Thelma Ritter. It was to be her final film.
•
The same year, aged 20, she retired from acting and married Robert Royce Green, by whom she had three sons, and was living as Edna Green in Yuma, Arizona, at the time of her passing.
