Subject: Carnoustie, Scotland

WHY IS THE 10TH HOLE AT CARNOUSTIE,
SCOTLAND NICKNAMED "SOUTH AMERICA"?

Carnoustie, in Scotland, host site to six British Open Championships, is like many venerated old golf courses in that it has a carefully chosen nickname for each of its 18 holes.

One of the more peculiar of Carnoustie's hole appelations is
the 10th hole, otherwise known as South America. Carnoustie
bears little resemblance to Brazilian rain forests, but there is a good reason for the hole's moniker, and it's buried in club lore.

It seems long ago there was a young lad of a caddie who one night had had a bit too many wee nips at the 19th hole. Far removed from a state of sobriety, the young man declared that night that he was going to head out for South America in search of fame and fortune. He never made it.

In fact, he didn't even make it off the clubs premises, awakening the next morning lying next to the 10th hole. It seems his short stopover had turned into a long hangover!
