Initial Meeting

Called to order 8:00 PM

Richard Jackson (Wisconsin SCOTTISH, Inc.), Peter Watts (Wisconsin Convener House of Gordon), Jock Smith (Milwaukee Burns Club), John Earnst (Milwaukee St. Andrews Society), Mitchell Helmrichs, Jeannine Moffitt, Jim Moffitt, Jon Young (International President Clan Young), Connie Young, Tom Stray (Newcastle), Micki McGeoghegan (Milwaukee Caraugh Club), Sheila Douglas (Heartstrings), Ken Douglas, Lyle Maryniak (Milwaukee St. Andrews Society Official Liaison), Julie Maryniak, Charlie Johnson (Madison St. Andrews Society; Stone Ring), Reol Zilke (Dancer), Andrea Rait (Billy Mitchell Piper), Teri Adlam (Waukesha Expo Center)

The Wisconsin Highland Games and Celtic Fling is scheduled for August 30, August 31, September 1, 2002.

The meeting began with much discussion regarding the function of this organization. Richard fielded questions. The lease of the property amounted to $12,000 for three days. Teri Adlam promoted the facility at the Expo Center, is very easy to work with and seemed to be able to accommodate this event. The arena can accommodate about 2800 people and work is currently progressing on remodeling and getting up to code. There are other outbuildings which is extremely important for all the venues planned

A paper was passed for the purpose of gathering email address of those present.

Richard announced the rates for membership for Wisconsin SCOTTISH, Inc: $35 individual; $25 for each additional family member; $100 for organizations/ societies. The main item on the agenda is to elect an executive board consisting of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. An extensive packet was provided of Bylaws, Articles of Incorporation, Statement of Purpose, all events and particulars of this highland games, and anticipated costs for all events, competitions, etc. We will need to contact the Waukesha Convention and Visitors Bureau as soon as possible to lock in rates for hotels and advertisement.

Dues and membership information was collected prior to moving on the officer elections. (Connie Young has this information and will present current membership at the next meeting.)

It was moved to begin the process of nominating and selecting the board of directors. Jon Young nominated Lyle Maryniak for vice president. Peter Watts seconded this motion. After discussion, Richard Jackson moved that Lyle be nominated as President. Second by Jon Young. Motion carried unanimously. Richard nominated himself as Vice President. Jon Young seconded. Motion carried unanimously. Sheila Douglas nominated herself for the Secretary position. Kyle Maryniak seconded. Motion carried unanimously. A deviation from the original Bylaws was motioned to separate the Secretary/ Treasurer position into two separate positions. Charlie Johnson nominated Connie Young as Treasurer. Seconded by Jock Smith. Motion carried unanimously.

2002 – 2003 Wisconsin SCOTTISH, Inc. Executive Board:
President: Lyle Maryniak
Vice President: Richard Jackson
Secretary: Sheila Douglas
Treasurer: Connie Young

Discussion continued about possibly changing the length of terms and other details of the runnings of this organization. It was agreed to continue this after the next meeting so that this year’s games could move on.

Those present were asked to beat the bushes and find others willing to take on some of the responsibilities of the extensive venue planned for this event.

The next meeting was decided upon. Friday 5 April 2002 at 6:00 PM at the Waukesha Expo Center.

Jock Smith congratulated and thanked Richard Jackson for all of his hard work organizing this event. It is agreed by all that this was a necessary move to encourage promotion of Scottish/ Celtic culture in Wisconsin and the Midwest. SCOTTISH is an acronym for “Scottish and Celtic Organizations, Teachers, Teams, and Institutes of Scottish arts and Heritage)

It was motioned by Peter Watts to adjourn the meeting. Second by Jon Young.
