The hair that had been pulled up so easily earlier that morning was escaping one straw colored lock at a time. The lighting in the tunnels was blaringly bright in contrast to the deep shadows of the dark tunnels. Lyla could hear the jostling, jarring train approaching from the left. Verda and Lyla were centered between two pits both spanning several tracks apart. Just as predicted by the clock on the wall, the Blue Line Express flew past without intention to stop. It was heading on its last route out of town and away from the filth. The sounds echoed and ricocheted in the confined space and made further vocal communication impossible. As the train carried away and dragged its squealing metal cries with it, a gush of air followed. The loose strains of hair were whipped away from her face. She had crossed those tan slender arms a crossed her chest in a display of uncertainty and vulnerability. Verda was moving around her and Lyla, with eyes downcast, was pivoting to follow. Food did sound like a pretty ingenious idea to the hungry youth. She took a step to follow. They were heading towards the darkness of those tunnels and Lyla was entering with the knowledge that a line worker would never have. There were creatures in there and they were the kind to eat you. But Lyla knew that without trust this adventure would amount to nothing. So she silenced the words that had filter to her tongue. sounds good. She let the mental words ebb out because she knew her soft lyrics would be lost with the screeches of the train and the bustle of the crowd. Behind Verda’s back the young woman fished into her pockets to ensure the whereabouts of the last twenty dollar bill she had on her. Once it was confirmed she followed without another hesitation.
