Perhaps these methods do work to humiliate and beat your children into submission, but if you love your children why do you want that? What is the virtue in this extreme submission/obedience? Frankly it is child abuse, both physical and sexual, masquerading as "discipline." I was spanked occasionally as a child. Now I am 25 and am traumatized by the experience. I went from being a happy kid with a good heart and caring and empathy for others (before I was spanked) to being morbidly shy, depressed, anxious and unhappy. I now deal with an overwhelming and sickening shame and self loathing and a loathing for the human race. I went from being a loving person to one who is emotionally shut down and filled with rage and hate. I am finally recovering, but the one thing that has helped me to heal is to realize my parents were wrong to spank me. Maybe you people punish your kids like this for religious reasons, but I can't see how any God other than a sadistic one would approve of this. It does not teach your children to be good, loving, kind, altruistic or any of the qualities Jesus promoted. It teaches them to be mindless, obedient slaves to your whims. I was at a boarding school in Africa. Although most punishments were in private. Our PE master used to administer canings in front of class at the end of PE lessons. If you were to have the cane, you were sent to wait on the sidelines until the end of the lesson when you were summoned and then had to wait whilst a low vaulting horse was positioned at one end of the gym. The PE teacher fetched his cane and you had to take down your PE shorts (all we wore, no underwear) and bend over the horse for what was described as a 'good hard caning', which it invariably was: six, eight or 12 of the best was administered in deathly silence with all the other boys watching. You were not supposed to cry or make a noise, but most boys did. After you had been caned you had to join the other boys in the shower at the end with your fresh welts visible. This was back in the 1960s and 1970s. I was punished like this between the age of nine and thirteen. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
