Oz, the shape of the fragments would give an indication of the true shape of the intact skull. Hominoid teeth are also closer to modern man's and set in a nice arc, rather than the much squarer arrangement in apes. The hominids also lacked the large canines typical of apes.

I have never been too keen on the idea of a missing link. The problem is that the popular press gets hold of scientific stories and picks up on catch phrases that are often misleading or meaningless.
I believe we have a series of skulls that give an adequate picture of the transition from ape to hominid.
