I'm not so sure about two sexes procreating being the norm. If numbers are what define the norm, then cells going through meiosis is the norm. There are also quite a number of hermaphorditic creatures that reproduce at will. They have the option of exchanging gentic material with another male/female creature, but don't have to.

Homosexuality is also pretty common in nature, especially when populations get out of control. "Deviation from the norm" seems to me in your case to be drawn from whatever it is humans have to do to procreate. We are a big minority on this planet.
