Ben, you wrote: >>> ... I did have a relationship with Jesus Christ, and that relationship was the main focal point of my life. I constantly read the Bible, prayed, fellowshipped with other Christians, etc. etc. I believed in God with all my heart. <<<
..... Many people have been misled, and sidetracked. The original Christians, those who followed the FIRST version of Christianity, the one by Jesus, led a communal lifestyle as partly described in Acts 2 and Acts 4. But after Jesus had been killed by the Romans many new, unauthorized (and useless?) versions were invented and "belief in them" made compulsory in many cases. Ignore all these changes if you REALLY want to follow Jesus.
..... There are many people who have no 2-way communications with God. Their prayers have the same effect as reading from their local telephone directory. There's a lot of truth in it!
..... Many other people have had spiritual personal experiences, that varied (considerably?) from the kind of "explanation", even dogma, that is/are available from local clerics. Others, without such experiences, cling to various translations of out-of-date, obsolete writings and (ancient? mythology-based?) stories.
..... Beliefs by themselves are worthless, but they can lead to "proper" activities and a better lifestyle.
