In reply to: Trinice 's message, "I'd like to discuss the issue of killing deformed babies..." on 05/ 7/03 2:19am

Hey everyone. I was looking through the archives, and came across this one. I noticed that no one even replied. Now, this sort of issue is something most people wouldn't touch with a 10-foot pole, but since we don't really have to worry too much about outside opinions here, maybe we could take Trinice up on her offer to discuss? (about 2 years too late, of course)

As in all discussions, we probably need to divide this issue into several separate issues. Here's what I came up with - anyone else is more than welcome to divide it however they see fit.

1) Physically deformed, but (as far as we can tell) mentally normal

2) Physically deformed with severe mental deficits (i.e., baby will never lead productive life, will require feeding tube entire life, is essentially a vegetable, etc., etc.)

(and for completeness' sake)

3) Mentally deficient, but physically normal.

Um. to be fair, #1 (and #3) are pretty rare - it's very uncommon for developmental abnormalities to severely affect physical development, to the point we'd say the baby is "severely deformed" without affecting its mental development, too. (I mean, the brain is just another organ...)

Whew. Holy crap. I have to stop now and think about this before I open my big fat mouth.
