I don't know, and neither does anyone else. But it sure is interesting - I mean, what if we calculate pi out to a gazillion decimal places, and then all of a sudden a recognizable pattern starts to appear?!? Like a message?

Like in the book Contact? I would accept that as evidence supporting the statement that there's some sentience "behind" our universe.

But the thing is, I don't understand it, neither do you, neither does anyone else - and there's nothing that we know (yet) that should indicate any sort of "purpose" behind it - it just 'is.' (for now)

You could say (and you probably will) that, "Because we don't understand it, it must be because God did it!!! Somehow!!! I don't care!!!"

And that would be intellectual crap. So please don't even bother, if that's your only point.

>And does pi change over time? If not, why not? etc.

Uh... Are you just making stuff up? O.K. - I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on this one.

"pi" is defined (and calculated as):

"The Ratio of A Circle's Circumference to It's Diameter"

Or, let C = circumference and D = diameter

pi = C/D

The only way "pi" could "change over time" would be if that relationship changed.

So, Quittner, I tell you what: Go outside and draw a perfect circle. Then draw it's diameter perfectly. Then every day, for the rest of your life, you measure the circumference to infinite precision, and you measure the diameter to infinite precision, then you calculate the circumference divided by the diameter.

Then write down all the different values you get for "pi." And you tell me! Is pi changing over time?

Duane

P.S. Here's the secret answer - QUITTNER, stop reading now because I'm about to tell the "truth," and you clearly don't care about that:

PI is EVOLVING over time!!! Yes! PI evolves!! Once PI was a lowly integer, existing in its integer-ish niche, then a random mutation caused it to become a real number!!! Then, its genes mutated to cause its offspring to become imaginary, then, finally, transcendental!!!!! All without god!!! Yes, PI is descended from monkies.

(and you wonder why America's children are among the stupidest in the world...)
