's message, "Jessica Lynch is not a hero" on 04/12/03 8:46pm
For those of you that don’t know, Jessica Lynch, Army Private First Class serving in 507th Maintenance Company, was captured March 23 by Iraqi forces and rescued 10 days later. Normally, no one except the family and close friends of a POW (Prisoner of War) actually give a shit as to what happens to them, including the media. But Jessica Lynch is different than your normal POWs. She’s a white, middle class woman. Because of this, she gets a lot of media attention and is called a hero virtually every passing day even though she herself did nothing but get rescued. Originally, it was stated that she was captured while fighting off an Iraqi ambush and sustained various wounds, including a stab wound. It turns out that the story was pure bullshit once you got past the part where the Iraqis had set up an ambush. What really happened was that her Hummer crashed while retreating from the ambush. Oh yeah, that’s a great heroic start right there. She was then taken to an Iraqi hospital and held prisoner for 10 days. Yes, a hospital, not a prison. In fact, she would have died if it weren’t for the Iraqis.
Maybe I just have a stricter definition of what a military “hero” is compared to what the people nowadays seem to have. Then again, people today are a bunch of bleeding heart pussies, so their definitions don’t matter. So what’s my definition of a hero? Anyone that puts their figurative balls further across the line than they have to in order to get the job done AND getting it done. Retreating and being captured doesn’t quite cut it for that definition, does it? I’m sure someone by now is probably thinking to themselves “Ok, smartass, who do you think IS a hero.” because you actually believe all the crap the news stations spoon feed you. But what the hell, I’ll indulge you with a link to some Medal of Honor recipients of World War II http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/mohiia1.htm . But that’s not all I’m going to do. Since I’m sure many of you are too lazy to do the comparison yourselves, I’ll do it for you. I’ll compare the first person on that list to Jessica Lynch. Here’s the commendation for the first person on that list.
Excerpt from http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/mohiia1.htm
ADAMS, LUCIAN
Rank and organization: Staff Sergeant, U.S. Army, 30th Infantry, 3d Infantry Division. Place and date: Near St. Die, France, 28 October 1944. Entered service at: Port Arthur, Tex. Birth: Port Arthur, Tex. G.O. No.: 20, 29 March 1945. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at risk of life above and beyond the call of duty on 28 October 1944, near St. Die, France. When his company was stopped in its effort to drive through the Mortagne Forest to reopen the supply line to the isolated third battalion, S/Sgt. Adams braved the concentrated fire of machineguns in a lone assault on a force of German troops. Although his company had progressed less than 10 yards and had lost 3 killed and 6 wounded, S/Sgt. Adams charged forward dodging from tree to tree firing a borrowed BAR from the hip. Despite intense machinegun fire which the enemy directed at him and rifle grenades which struck the trees over his head showering him with broken twigs and branches, S/Sgt. Adams made his way to within 10 yards of the closest machinegun and killed the gunner with a hand grenade. An enemy soldier threw hand grenades at him from a position only 10 yards distant; however, S/Sgt. Adams dispatched him with a single burst of BAR fire. Charging into the vortex of the enemy fire, he killed another machinegunner at 15 yards range with a hand grenade and forced the surrender of 2 supporting infantrymen. Although the remainder of the German group concentrated the full force of its automatic weapons fire in a desperate effort to knock him out, he proceeded through the woods to find and exterminate 5 more of the enemy. Finally, when the third German machinegun opened up on him at a range of 20 yards, S/Sgt. Adams killed the gunner with BAR fire.
In the course of the action, he personally killed 9 Germans, eliminated 3 enemy machineguns, vanquished a specialized force which was armed with automatic weapons and grenade launchers, cleared the woods of hostile elements, and reopened the severed supply lines to the assault companies of his battalion.
The Side-by-side comparison
ADAMS, LUCIAN LYNCH, JESSICA
Was stopped by germans trying to reopen supply line Was stopped by Iraqis delivering supplies
Was under fire from machine guns and grenades Was under fire from AK-47s and RPGs
Charged towards the enemy alone with a BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) and hand grenades Retreated from enemy forces.
Killed 9 Germans, eliminated 3 enemy machineguns, vanquished a specialized force that was armed with automatic weapons and grenade launchers, cleared the woods of hostile elements. Hummer was hit with an RPG, crashed into another vehicle and she was injured.
Reopened the severed supply lines to the assault companies of his battalion. Was taken captive by Iraqi forces for 10 days
There’s a big difference between them once you take it down to the basics and compare the two. While 9 Germans may not sound like a lot to you out there, but let me tell you, doing what Adams did wasn’t a walk in the park. Anyone that breathes can get captured and become a POW, but it takes a guy with balls to take out 3 machine guns* and live to tell the tale. People like him should be idolized and saluted, not people like Lynch. Moreover, if anyone thinks she must have “suffered horribly” during her 10 days as a POW, I’ll bet you anything that you didn’t know there were Vietnam War veterans that were POWs for over 20 years. And the gooks were harsher prison keepers, I guarantee it.
*Probably MG-42s. The average rate of fire for one is 1200 bullets per minute. This means 20 bullets per second. Multiply that by 3 and that means he had a potential of 60 bullets firing at him from machine guns alone
