In reply to: out going! 's message, "What are some good ideas for going away, to do with queens?" on 10:56:03 03/03/10 Wed

1. Whatever you festival represents, try doing a tour of a facility that might help process, make, etc. (Example shrimp processing plant tour, crawfish pond tour, etc.

2. Visit the children's ward of a hospital and bring small gifts such as coloring books/colors, stuffed animals, etc.

3. Have a craft day of making a festival related craft of the festival you represent. (Example Chef's Hat, Mardi Gras Mask, etc.)

4. Have a tour/photo op of interesting places in the town of your festival. Maybe the Mayor can be on hand to welcome all the visiting queens and present them with a city pin, key to the city, certificate, etc.

5. If your festival is a crop related festival (and it's in season), take them to a farm, take pictures, have a farmer teach them how they take care of the crop, harvest and then maybe teach them how to do something. (Example corn shucking, cotton, rice, etc.)

6. If you have a king then by all means utilize that. When Kristen was Shrimp Queen, her King had a shrimping boat there for her visiting queens to visit and take a ride on then there was a shrimper who had docked and he showed the queens what happens when a shrimper comes in from shrimping.

7. After, visiting the shrimping docks and the shrimp processing plant (which smells), a local person was kind enough to prepare a luncheon for her (of course it had Shrimp in it) and her festival allowed the use of the festival building for the luncheon as well as her going away events.

8. When she was Buggy, the festival was able to put together locals who had horses, a buggy as well as a trailer to hall queens and they took a "horseback" tour of the town. Afterwards, there was a swimming party at a farmer queen's home with a luncheon.

These are just a few examples. I'm sure there are other ideas out there but this is what came to mind.

Hope it helps.
