在恐怖組織阿蓋德（ Al-Qaeda）揚言施襲的恐怖陰霾下，南非世界盃終於到了前日（周日）閉幕，但就在這一天，恐怖分子發動世盃恐襲。在非洲中部國家烏干達（ Uganda），首都坎帕拉（ Kampala）一間餐廳和一間欖球俱樂部，直播世盃賽事，冷不防遭自殺式連環襲擊，最少 78人死亡，包括 6名美國人，另有超過 100人受傷。與阿蓋德組織有關的索馬里武裝分子已承認施襲。美國總統奧巴馬（ Barack Obama）譴責襲擊是「懦夫」所為。
