FAANEGA congratulates our very own, Laura Sherman, for being selected as a 2011 Governor’s Honors Program (GHP) participant in Visual Arts! She will attend GHP from mid-June to mid-July in Valdosta State University (VSU) studying her major and minor areas of interest. Laura, who is a rising senior at Clarke Central High School, is one of the only three students selected from her school. The other two are Emma Kissane (Communicative Arts) and Dory MacMillan (Social Studies).

According to their website, GHP is a six-week summer residential instructional program (four weeks in 2011) designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the regular school year. The GHP is fully-funded by the Georgia General Assembly, and operates at no cost to the participants, who are housed at VSU’s dormitories during the entire program period.

GHP participants go through a rigorous and competitive selection process. Rising juniors and seniors in Georgia (public, private, home schools) are nominated in a specific instructional area. Competition starts in the school level. A score on the PSAT or SAT is required, as well as transcript of grades and records, nomination forms, endorsements, and other pertinent information to substantiate the nominations. Local nominees are then sent to Statewide screening interviews/auditions/tests.

Other FAANEGA students who were selected as GHP scholars during the last five years were Athena Lao (2006 – Latin) and Carmina Escalante (2009 – Biology).

Again, congratulations Laura (and her parents, too - Jackie and Esther Sherman)! We are so proud of your achievements. Keep up the good work.
