Subject: toshiba satellite pro 400CS (data error reading drive C)

I wonder if anyone can help me. I just purchased a 2nd hand Toshiba Satellite Pro 400CS. Windows 98 was installed on it prior to my purchase. It is slow as can be but was a nice little laptaop. Anyway I went to boot it up today and no luck. It gave me a black screen with a line that read," data error reading drive C. In one of the many reboot attempts it did allow me a choice to boot jump in safe mode but went back into the black screen. Does anyone have any ideas other than depositing the laptop into a trash receptacle?
