Subject: Toshiba Laptop 1905-S303

I just bought my third Toshiba laptop. The oldest one is about 6 years old and still works great (except the battery). I purchased the Toshiba model 1905-S303 on Nov 29, 2002. It has performed as expected, except for the USB port. I searched high an low on the web to find out if the ports conformed to the USB 2.0 specification. I couldn't find the info anywhere!! I found a "Toshiba User's Manual" on the hard drive of the computer. The manual said the USB ports had a transfer rate of 12mbps - which is the USB 1.1 spec. However, the Toshiba catalog I got in the mail said MOST laptop computers made today have USB 2.0 ports. The description (in the catalog) for the 1905-S303 laptop just said "2 USB ports".

I had purchased a USB 2.0 CD-RW drive several months ago for use with my tower PC. It is rated at 24x10x40. I hooked it up to the new laptop and installed my burner software. I copied a CD from the laptop's CD drive to the external USB 2.0 drive. I told the software to burn it at the maximum speed, which is 24x. It copied and verified the CD and reported that the process was a success at that speed.

The maximum burn speed for a USB 1.1 drive is 4x. So, it looks like the Toshiba 1905-S303 laptop DOES have USB 2.0 ports!

I hope this info is helpful.

Bill
