Let's try running the 90-90 Hard Drive Diagnostics on the drive, just to make sure it is running properly at the mechanical level.

You can locate this diagnostic under [Diags] or [Utilities] in most issues of the Dell Resource CD that came with your computer. You will need to have a new, pre-formatted diskette on hand since the diagnostic must be run from a "floppy boot," and the program will prompt you to make one.

If you do not have a Resource CD the same program can be downloaded from the Dell File Library at this URL:

http://support.dell.com/us/en/filelib/

Search by exact filename for HDDCTST.EXE.
Save the file to your desktop or whatever folder you prefer.

Whether you are running the downloaded version or the Resource CD version, double-click the icon that prompts you to create a diskette.

Once the diskette is made, restart the computer with the diskette in the drive.

Your system should reboot to a simple A:\> DOS prompt. At the prompt type:

HDDCT[Enter]

This will load the diagnostics and run through a series of tests. If you get any errors here please make an exact copy of their wording; and post to Dell support so that the HDD can be replaced.
