Panama City, May 7,2003 (AFP) - This year's 74 Miss Universe contestants will not only have to be beautiful and brainy, but healthy as well.

The health ministry in host country Panama , Wednesday said contestants from China, Taiwan, Singapore and Canada, the countries hardest hit by SARS, will have to be tested negative for the contagious disease within 48 hours before arriving here and have a health certificate to prove it.

SARS or Savere Acute Respiratory Syndrome beagan in Asia but has since spread to other parts of the world.

In addition to the health certificate from the four countries named, all 74 contestants will be required to undergo airport medical examinations on their arrival in Panama, said the health ministry.

Panama Health Minister Fernando Garcia said organizers of the June 3 Miss Universe Pageant has been adviced of the health testing requirements.

Contestants from the 74 participating countries were expected to arrive here between May 13 to May 17.
