Subject: Apasara joins ranks of 'ambassadors'

Beauty queens will stress Thai culture

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has enlisted the country's first Miss Universe and other beauty queens to act as volunteer tourism ambassadors, according to the new minister in charge of tourism.

Paveena Hongsakul, a Prime Minister's Office minister, said that the campaign would help improve the country's image and promote its culture and traditions.

Heading the campaign will be Apasara Hongsakul, Miss Universe 1964 and also Mrs Paveena's elder sister.

Other participants will include Chalida Taochalee, Miss Thailand 1998 and Sruangsuda Lawanprasert, Miss Thailand 1997.

"They will act as representatives of the country to publicise its image as a cultural destination to the world, welcome the country's guests, or join both the local and international meetings on my behalf," Mrs Paveena said.

The ambassadors would also help to showcase the talents of Thai women and reduce unhelpful stereotyping, she said.

Ms Apasara is no stranger to the international limelight, having done public-relations work for the country on six-month assignments at Expo 1967 in Canada and Expo 1970 in Japan.

Ms Sruangsuda said the project would bring more responsibilities to Miss Thailand, whose term usually is just one year.

Bangkok will be the first target of the high-profile ambassadors, who will stress efforts to improve tourist safety. They will also help to inaugurate a family walking street campaign on Rajdamri Road.

Mrs Paveena said that more campaigns would also be staged to encourage people who deal with tourists, particularly taxi drivers and guides, to avoid steering foreign visitors toward activities such as child prostitution.

"This is not a big problem for Thailand," she said. "It is much more severe overseas. But it is a matter of protecting the country's reputation."
