A worthwhile movie to watch. Interesting, loaded with color, and some typical Hammer characteristics. Good acting, by Cushing and Lee as the Mummy. It's not as dark and gloomy as the Universals 1932 version with Karloff, but it's nevertheless an interesting watch. Tim had posted some sites in Monster section re Depression era films. These are but two good examples, an oldie dark Uni, vs a fast moving Hammer color, moreso adventure. The Mummy, by Christopher Lee, even walks briskly, compared to the slower dragging style used by Karloff. Which was more horror? Well, neither to me, but if I had to select...and was much much younger, I'd say the gloomy black and white scenes, shadows, and movements of the 32 version. A personal subjective opinion of course.

Note: it's shown occasionally on TV, is available on dvd, rentals, is considered camp by some, but if you'd like to see an interesting film, with the lovely Joan Collins, in ancient Egypt settings with what I consider a good story and a good twist ending, try to see Howard Hawks "Land of the Pharoahs" with Jack Hawkins and Joan Collins. No mummy, but lots of engineering, candy, and surprises in the 1955 film.

The Mummy (1932) is slower paced, but also more moody and atmospheric. I like both films, but would have to pick the Universal one as my favorite.

The lovely Joan Collins was still looking good a decade later when Edith Keeler caught the eye of Captain James T. Kirk in the Star Trek classic City on the Edge of Forever.

I too like the 1932 Mummy a little better than the Hammer Mummy.

This version is still one of the best mummy films that I've seen though.
It actually was a loose remake of the 40s Kharis films.
