I think this is interesting PJ.

If you get a spanking when you are a kid do you just say "I got a spanking".?

If you get a spanking when you are a teenager do you you say "I got a whipping". or "I got a licking"?

I think you are right. I guess most of the real younger types are used to calling it "spanking" but there comes a point, maybe around 9 years old, where "whipping" catches on even for those OTK hand sessions.

Some parents and teachers still use the term "spanking" as sort of part of the punishment as the word carries, wrongfully so, a connotation of immaturity around here.

It is also more of a gender thing. GIRLS are more prone to keep the "spanking" term longer than BOYS are.

So, I think it is a "tough guy" approach. In this part of the world, spankings are still discussed and talked about but it just sounds bigger and tougher to say, "I got a whipping" or "Dad whipped me" than it is "I got a spanking."

It is also acceptable to say something like "Man, Walters tore my a** up" or "Dude, I can't, my Dad wore me out the last time I tried that." Getting one's "a** torn up" or being "worn out" is also acceptable guy speak.

Also, we all still respect the spanking. It is totally OK to decline to do something or go somewhere to a peer by saying it did in the past or it would in the future result in a "whipping," getting "worn out," or having your "a** torn up."

We are big and bad dudes, we don't get "spankings," we get "whippings." It is really a regional thing.

The words "licking," "tanning" and "hiding" would also be OK they are just not regionally in use around here.

Also, it is acceptable but not common (except calling the school spanking a paddling) here to describe the spanking in terms of the implement: "switching," "paddling," "belting," or "strapping." As long as the implement sounds severe.

Also, part of our regional dialect is to drop the final "g" in most words hence: whippin', lickin', paddlin', switchin', etc. If the term is used, one usually hears "spankin'." For the same regional dialect issues, one often hears, "whuppin'." Turtle is a "whuppin'" kid but he is also from Alabama. Turtle is as country as a turnip green.

We want our peers to think we are tough and can take it although, in reality, we are blubbering and begging and hopping around like a little kid. But to hear most guys talk they "took their whipping like a man."
