Not so here in Britain. Panty girdles were almost unheard of and it was open girdles, necessarily attached to stockings to stop girdles from "riding up". Girdles DID ride up sometimes but only if stockings were too long to anchor them down. Women laughed at adverts for girdles which claimed they wouldn't ride up "even when worn without stockings". They always did. Worse, a girdle without stockings could quickly go all the way up to end like a tourniquet around the waist!
