At the time I was writing about my wife wore a firm open girdle with stockings. Panty girdles and tights came along later. Like most women she found that it was not possible to wear the girdle without stockings because it would quickly ride up and form a very tight bunch around her waist, so taking off the girdle would have necessitated also taking off her stockings.
When tights came along for general wear my wife was happy to adopt them, always with a panty girdle worn over them both to help keep them up and provide control. On more than one occasion she decided that tights were unnecessary - or it was too warm to wear them - but when she took off the tights she put the girdle back on. She did have a pair of the "light" elastic panties which she could wear on those rare occasions when she felt she had to wear tights but didn't want the firm panty girdle.
