Interesting, apparently you can't reply to a post that has been archived. I tried to reply to a post by Glen but couldn't. It is currently at https://www.voy.com/224381/12595.html Who knows how long that link will work.

History is repeating itself, in a way. Sunday June 1 is the last day for Hudson's Bay Company stores. Also known as The Bay. Canada's oldest store, history going back 355 years. Started out as a fur trading company, name inspired by Hudson Bay. I suppose I should know the history better, but King Charles II in 1670 granted The Hudson Bay Company all the land drained by Hudson Bay, or something like that, for fur trading. My history is a bit hazy. Of course it wasn't his to give away but that didn't bother him. It did bother the Indigenous peoples, and still does. Although they did like the trading.

The bay was a huge company, over 8000 people loose their jobs tomorrow, very sad. 86 locations across Canada now, I am sure there were more in the past. The Bay has been having trouble for years. I don't know all the details, but part of it was their merchandise was higher price. There is a Bay store just a couple of miles away from me, but I don't shop there, so I am part of the problem. I walked through it quite often as I would park outside their entrance to get into Georgian Mall, they were connected. I did that because there were never many cars outside their entrance and I could park close by. Not a good sign for them. With modern retailing the large department store model is not what people want, unless you are a bottom feeder like Walmart.

I guess next week I will have to phrase that as "There was a Bay store just a couple of miles away from me."

The last couple of things I bought from them were some Spanx from their website. Nobody stocks them in a store.

I guess this is a really long off topic post nobody came here to read, sorry, but it follows on from Glen's comment about Eaton's, a similarly large department store that met its demise years ago. This is surprisingly emotional for me. Thanks for listening.
