Subject: Girdles and Gifts

Many years ago I was a nugget petroleum engineer involved in the development of the North Sea Oil and gas fields. Most of the field workers, those working on the drilling platforms, were from the UK, some from Norway however I was officed in Iceland. As a result I made frequent trips to the UK and spent a great deal of time with the platform workers . My company encouraged technical personnel as my self to socialize with those workers and I spent many pleasurable times with them. These were very hard working people doing dangerous and hazardous jobs often with long absences from their homes.

At that time, all the women there wore stockings, most often with round garters. I questioned the round garters and it turned out that while
stockings were very available and inexpensive, Girdles and garter belts were not. I think they may have been highly taxed as luxury items, or something. As a result there were very few girdles among the women and those they had were old & worn, patched & repaired and borrowed & lent.

One of the young women I had gotten to know especially wished she had a nice girdle.

I had access to the military post exchange on Iceland which carried a surprising selection of Warners, Poirette and Formfit girdles so I brought a girdle for her on my next trip. I think they cost about 3 USD at the PX. For comparison, a bottle of Beefeaters cost 90 cents. This young women was absolutely thrilled to receive a smart little girdle - one that had some ’snap’ - and soon asked if I could get one for her mum and sister. Well, of course, I could.

As the word spread, I received other requests for girdles, remarkably more often from men for their wives and girlfriends, but every once in a while I would feel a shy little tug on my sleeve and find a young women with an imploring look on her face seeking a girdle. Some others were much more direct.

After a bit, I began bringing a few girdles with me every time I made the trip. I had to clear customs every time I entered the UK, usually with the same agent. He was a dedicated, diligent, proper agent and was suspicious that I had girdles with me every time but he was OK when I assured they were to be gifts and that I was not selling them.

He expressed that his wife similarly longed for a girdle, too. I offered one to him but there was no way he could accept it.

I think I provided 25 or 30 such girdles. I never accepted payment for them but suggested they invite me dinner instead. All these were panty girdles which caused in some confusion, but I happened to prefer panty girdles to OBGs so that is what I bought. No one ever refused one for that reason.

I spent my agreed-upon two years in Iceland and have been back to the UK only a few short times since then but those first trips are a nice memory.
