No, this is not a fantacy, neither has it ever been a problematic issue to think or talk about, and to call it abuse is an axaggeratiion. I only find it interesting to do some research about the use of such and similar devices.

In Norway hwere I grew up in the 1950rd and 1970es authorities seemed to be very eager at guiding the shape and development of children by a variety of devices.

I think the thing might have that purpose, because it was rather stiff and mechanically supporting in a way that gave very mixed feelings.

Another thing of the same cathegory I remember was when I was 7 years old and had my first school physical, the doctor found out that my feet were too flat.

It was then sent to a shop of orthopedic devices where they took measures of my feet and they casted two devices that I should wear under my feet insid the shoes.

But they did not get me to use these devices more that a couple of hours. They were really unpleasant. They wers soon stuffed aside never to be used again, and the issue of flat feet never surfaced again.

I went however through one type of ordeal when I was 11-12 years old that I do not hesitate to call abuse. It was not sexual abuse, but according to my opinion the ordeal was far worse than most cases of sexual abuse.

The ordeal was orthodontics. I call it abuse because I do not think I needed it and the result have given me far more disadvantages than advantages.

But the procedure did not fail. It gave the intended result, but the intended result was not a good one for me.

They extracted two teeth in the upper jaw and two in the lower one so that I have 4 less teeth than originally. The procedure that involved using a device in the nights in addition to the braces was also really unpleasant.

I must say that I react in the same way about the practice of subjecting so many kids to that ordeal as people generally react to abuse and rape of children. And I think my reaction is appropriate. This ordeal do far more harm than good in most cases, and is most often good only for the orthodontist business that gain gross proffit from it.
