A way must be found for West Australian Premier Colin Barnett to back down gracefully and abandon plans for a gas hub in the Kimberley, a protest rally in Perth has been told.

At Sunday's rally in the premier's electorate of Cottesloe, around 1000 people were urged to fight the proposed $30 billion gas precinct at James Price Point, about 60km north of Broome.

Mr Barnett has come under fire for moving to compulsorily acquire land for the Woodside Petroleum-led project after negotiations with traditional land claimants stalled.

Wilderness Society WA coordinator Peter Robertson told the rally that Woodside's joint venture partners - BP, Shell, Chevron and BHP Billiton - were not so sure about the project.

"Certainly BHP, Shell and Chevron have repeatedly expressed their reluctance about being forced by the premier to go to James Price Point," he said.

"The problem is of course we have a premier who's absolutely determined to impose this project on the coast of the Kimberley, no matter what.

"Somehow or other we have to convince the premier that there is a way out for him that will save his political face and at the same time protect one the world's great natural environments.

"So it's a challenge for us all to work out how we can allow the premier to back down gracefully."

Mr Robertson said gas from the Browse Basin off the Kimberley could be piped south to existing facilities or processed offshore in a floating facility.

"There are many alternatives, we don't have to stuff up one of the world's great natural areas to produce gas to export to China and Japan."

The gas hub and other industrial projects such as uranium mining in the Kimberley would hurt tourism in the region, Mr Robertson said.

"You can start to kiss goodbye to the unique Kimberly brand that people travel from around the world to enjoy."

WWF-Australia WA director Paul Gamblin said public pressure was building on the big companies and governments involved to reassess the need for heavy industry in a pristine place like the Kimberley.

"This campaign is about building the urgency, building the community support for government to pursue conservation in the Kimberley with all the enthusiasm it pursues mega projects.

"The Barnett government is hearing the call, there is no doubt about that, but so far its action has been tentative, some would say timid."

Save the Kimberley co-chairman and traditional owner Neil McKenzie told the rally that people power could stop the gas hub and he had a message for Mr Barnett.

"You are barking up the wrong tree and you have one hell of a fight ahead of you."

The premier was invited to address the rally but declined.
