Economic ImpactEvery $1 invested in The Big Issue Street Magazine is generating benefits to society of $4.50...

An Economic Impact Report, prepared by RMCG Consultants and released by The Big Issue in 2009, analysed the quantifiable economic benefits to society of The Big Issue Street Magazine Enterprise.

Supporting a vendor group of some 350 homeless and marginalised people at any one time, the report showed that in the absence of the Street Magazine Enterprise those individuals would impose additional aggregate demands on society at a cost of around $10 million per annum.

The report showed that homeless people make greater demands on a wide range of services than do members of the general community, with a study by the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) estimating these additional costs at between $10,000 to $40,000 per homeless person per year.

As a result The Big Issue Street Magazine Enterprise is estimated to save society $20,000 per vendor per year from a reduction in the level of demand for a range of social services. Taken across the 350 vendors in the program, this equates to a total annual economic benefit of $7 million. In addition, the Street Magazine Enterprise generates commercial benefits of $3 million from sales of the magazine, which are shared equally between the vendors and The Big Issue, to cover operating costs.

Since its launch in 1996, The Big Issue vendors in Australia have sold over 5.5 million magazines, with more than $10 million going into the pockets of homeless and unemployed people.
