Unfortunately our diets don't provide a good supply, and as we get older, it is poorly absorbed through the digestive tract(gut). It is often prescribed for people who have had some kind of nerve or brain injury...stroke, TIA or accident. Mine was prescribed when I suffered nerve damage to my right eye a few years ago. The only dependable way to get enough B12 for some of us is by injection. It bypasses the gut and goes directly into the bloodstream where it is needed. If your doctor thinks you need it, he/she will prescribe it. If I took a B12 pill every day with the same dosage as my monthly shot, I would only get about one tenth total of what I get with one shot, so I take the shot. Hope this answers your questions.
