I never had that happen to me but got plenty of penicillin shots through my high school years. Hurt like crazy and had to be held down most of the time.

I have four sisters and when anyone of them or myself would stay home from school we would sometime come home to find our Dr. there giving a penicillin shot to a sick sister and as a precaution he would recommend all of us also get the shot so we wouldn't get sick. One by one we would pull our pants down and get a penicillin shot in our butt, we called it the marshmallow shot. Shots never bothered me but my sisters would cry getting the shot.

Penicillin is used as an antibiotic to cure a sickness, never as any kind of precaution to avoid it. Penicillin is often used to prevent infections in people undergoing dental extractions or for people with Rheumatic Fever.
