Curious to hear them! I still remember getting a flu jab at the age of 7. Mum picked me up from school without saying anything at all about going to get the jab, only to pull into the GP surgery on the way home. It was at this point I started crying and she told me that I was going to get my flu jab. We went upstairs to the waiting room outside the nurses room. It felt like a very long wait whilst I was crying so much. Mum got me to take my jumper off, exposing my school shirt underneath. After a few minutes, the nurse opened the door, dressed in her apron and wearing her gloves. She called my name, and my mum pretty much had to drag me in the room. The nurse told me to sit on my mums lap. She could see that I was very upset, and came over to me. She showed me the jab, which although she was trying to help, it made it worse seeing that viscous needle right in front of me. She got my mum to cuddle me. The nurse lifted my sleeve up, and started touching my arm ready to clean it and see where to jab me. I squirmed and was still crying, everyone in the waiting room probably wondered what the hell was happening. The nurse sternly said that I needed to stay still otherwise she would have to do it again. Mum had finally got me to stay still and stop wriggling. The nurse re-raised my sleeve shirt - I tried to put my hand over my shoulder to stop her looking, but she simply moved it out the way and sighed. She started wiping my shoulder with a wipe. I was getting really nervous and started to wriggle again at this point. The nurse then told me to close my eyes, and I tensed up my arm. She told me to relax it otherwise it would hurt even more, but I couldn't relax it. The nurse then moved on (as my eyes were closed, all I could hear was her rustling about for needles, cotton wool, etc. Around 30 seconds later, I heard the nurse approaching me. She grabbed my arm, and quickly jabbed the needle into my arm, injecting the vaccine. I screamed loudly, as it really hurt - partly due to me tensing my arm up so much. She removed the needle after she had finished injecting it, and then told me I could open my eyes again. I saw the needle - "that's just been in my arm" I thought, squirming again as I also saw blood dripping out my arm. The nurse came back and placed a cotton ball over it, applying pressure. After a minute or so, she swapped this for a plaster. I was still crying, but not as much as I had been, as I thought this would then be all over. How wrong I was - "as this is his first flu jab, he will need to come back in 4 weeks for a second". I started crying and shouting "NO NO NO". My mum wasn't best pleased and said it had to be done. Perhaps I will write about this second time in a future post.
