Having grown up in the era of penicillin shots, visits to the doctor normally ended with what I feared most - pulling everything down to my ankles and bending over the receptionist's lap to get one. The embarrassment of her watching me get in the bare bottom was even worst than injection itself and, if I failed to pull my pants down far enough, she exacerbated my humiliation by pulling them all the way down herself before I bent over. I vividly recall waiting in that exposed and vulnerable position during the several minutes it took for the shot to be prepared - staring at the girl's legs as I felt her stroke my naked posterior, accompanied by her comment that she could feel my heart thobbing against her thigh and such condescenting remarks as, "Be brave, you know you have to get this, it will soon be over". When the injection was ready she often pinched one cheek to divert my attention from the jab in the other but I was usually told to take a deep breath, close my eyes and pinch my nose just before the needle went in. When I felt the needle, I released my nose and opened my eyes but she held me firmly in place for the real pain of the serum being injected. It seemed to take forever, during which time I squeezed her thigh tightly until at last I felt the final sting of the needle being withdrawn and I stood up gingerly rubbing my tender bottom before getting dressed.
When I needed a smallpox vaccination, I was worried where I would get it but the doctor vaccinated my arm, which made me feel very proud, especially with the receptionist watching. My "victory" was, however, short-lived because I then had to drop trousers, pull down pants and bend over her lap for a booster shot. Apart from the embarrassment that booster was almost a relief because, unlike the big painful penicillin shots to which I was accustomed, it was just a brief sting that I hardly felt at all. Once again, my relief was short-lived because it turned out to be what my girlfriend called a "creeper" and I couldn't sit down for days after getting it.
