Still use glass mercury type thermometers where I work at a community clinic for kids 5 to 10 years old living in financially disadvantaged households. Rectal temperatures used to be limited to 5 year olds but lately older ones with certain intellectual and emotions limitations also get a RT. Mostly boys and they are not happy about it especially the older ones.

To answer your question, a scholastically challenged 8 to 10 year old boy (that is denied having a temperature taken in the mouth with a glass oral thermometer) most always reacts with disbelief upon it being made obvious to him that he will be having his temperature taken in his rear end unlike the rest of his peers. He complaints immediately which continue until entry of the glass rectal thermometer which at this point where embarrassment sets in but complaints continue for the next 5 minutes until removal but it is not over as a second pass is performed that lasts for 2 to 3 more minutes, where upon the first reading is verified by the second reading.

And is it followed by injection?

Many of the youngsters are here for a weekly health monitoring visit where a youngster's health status is documented which must include a current temperature reading. If an older boy has his temperature taken rectally with a glass rectal thermometer due to an intellectual and/or emotional shortcomings, directly after the glass rectal thermometer is removed following the second entry, he may receive a suppository that has a combination of supplements mixed in with the suppository media that supports improvement shortcomings. The suppository is administered by use of a spring loaded suppository syringe which is positioned in place for about 6 to 8 minutes to enable the media to melt at which time a push of a button injected the media into his rear end. The syringe is left in place for another 2 to 3 minutes to enable the media to flow downhill, so to speak, thus following the path of least resistance where it is then absorbed. Injections are performed in a soundproof examination room by the nurse practitioner where there are no special accommodations for taking a temperature.

What if your "youngster having an intellectual or emotional shortcoming" (your phrasing a testament to your clinical expertise) should impulsively roll over, with a glass, mercury-filled thermometer sticking out of his bottom?

None of this is real.

Too much watching of dubious videos at dubious websites. Or to much reading of fantasy, which surely isn't Tolkien's fantasy...

Too much watching of dubious videos at dubious websites

I bet that's why all the other medical fetish forums other than Doctors Who Made Housecalls and this one no longer exists. The RT forum led me to a dubious website called RT Advisor which had dubious videos some of which were kids getting RT's (which is considered kitty porn) and meeting other members through private messaging and chat room messaging which led one of the people on there grooming me and sending kitty porn to me. And another guy on there demanding I strip naked. I had another guy on a Yahoo Group on this topic who wanted me to fly to Philly and we would meet up at a hotel and he'd take my RT. I did not go, not only because I didn't know him and didn't know what he woud do to me, but because airplane fares are expensive.

While the moderator of these medical fetish forums takes a hands off approach claiming that the members post here and Doctors Who Made Housecalls at their own risk, be aware that there are unsavory characters on these sites who want no more than to do harmful things to you or worse. And while assumption of the risk is a valid legal defense for these sites, the moderator needs to lessen the risk to ensure that the harm to those who come on here is lessened. That is why Voyage Info Systems has a no sexual content provision in its terms of service agreement.

Tim, remember me in the 1930's Universal Dracula movie. How I craved eating bugs instead of what my master consumed. Did you feel either sorrow or anger for me?

Actually, people who watched that movie were and still in a fantasy world. It was not real except for certain individuals who believe want to believe even when confronted with reality still might believe that vampires exist.

So far as taking rectal temps are concerned, there is probably a small, and even more diminishing population of adults who want to believe and continues to grasp onto the notion that this practice is performed on children, and in particular continues play itself out somewhere out there in a clinical setting though it would not surprise me if taking rectal temps in the home still. It seems odd that someone (and I mean you Tim) who is drawn to a forum with topics involving corporal punishment of children has better things to do than than expressing an obsession over a fantasy about taking the rectal temp of child whether it happens to be real or imagined. That narrative makes even more sense should you happen live under a bridge.

When this 10 year old with some limitations reacts with disbelief that he's going to have his temperature taken rectally, does anyone take a minute to talk to him about it and ask him if he thinks he can sit still for a minute and hold the thermometer in his mouth?

It seems it would be worth a try.

I don't know how in other parts of the world, but in Europe traditional medical thermometers are generally no longer produced nor sold. It's been already years since I saw anything but contactless electronic thermometers. As one can guess, a typical measurement is done by putting the device near patient's forehead and clicking a button of sorts...

I suppose you might be right about Europe but there are some homes and clinic in North America where electronic thermometers have not got much traction in some places in North America. One of the biggest problem concerning electronic thermometers is inconsistent readings as opposed to a glass thermometer produce consistently, reliable results which more than offsets the minor inconvenience the few minutes it take to acquire a reading. In a clinical environment, the average time required to obtain a reading can be reduced significantly by taking the temperature of a few patients at a time.

However, special consideration should be accounted for a youngster having an intellectual or emotional shortcoming which would impact on the ability to keep a glass oral thermometer intact while placed in the mouth. That is, an accommodation can be made to include a youngster having a temperature taken rectally with a glass rectal thermometer and thus not affecting the average time it takes to obtain a temperature reading.

Contactless (infrared) thermometers are notoriously inaccurate. The joke amongst healthcare providers is that they are only used when you're required to take a temp. (such as part of vital signs) and not when you actually want to know what the temp is.

That said, there are many alternatives to the 5 minute glass rectal thermometer.
