My post indicated a different perspective regarding parents dealing with their children receiving injections, whether in the arm or buttocks. In my case I also expounded on my and my parents' reaction to the rabies injections.
Now, as for your post, particularly being a pediatric nurse, I do find it somewhat disturbing, regarding your approach and comments on the physical aspects of boys in this age group.
I would think that a parent seeing their child, whether male or female receiving an injection/(s) would empathize with the brief pain of such injection(s), nothing more; with the understanding that the injection(s) were given to assist in defeating whatever ailment they were given for.
As for rectal temperatures, I say this: First, I realize it is not totally abandoned as a diagnostic tool, but with today's medical technology/ the training and approach of care givers, the rectal temperature is not necessarily considered the first option, unless a doctor has ordered it or if it hospital policy that rectal readings be taken.(on the wards)
I think too, nowadays many parents, if you were to ask them their reaction(s) to rectal temperatures on their children (age consideration a major factor) at home, you'd probably find that most would say it was done by ear, orally or by forehead scanner. As for a parent seeing their child having their temperature obtained rectally by a care giver; they'd probably be in a state of angst, considering, again unless policy on a ward, that there was a really good need for a rectal measurement.
Just my thoughts.
