I am quite timid when it comes to shots. I have posted here before about childhood shots. Having not had any in many years I got used to not getting any. UNTIL......
A month ago, my cute little female black cat that sleeps with me decided to attack my hand. Yup. I was chatting online and out of the blue the cat just engulfed my hand. At this point, you either pull your hand out and get it cut more, or the cat will dig deeper. So you MUST pull your hand away. In addition, this is the first time the cat hit a vein. Yup. Blood started squirting everywhere and I had to very quickly, pull my hand away and run to the bathroom. Blood got over everything. I really didn't know how to deal with this and it hurt like crazy. I put my hand under water as blood continued to squirt. Then I wrapped my hand in my towel and pressed down. I didn't dare look at the hand for at least 15 minutes. Okay the bleeding stopped but my hand didn't look good. Weird. It began swelling. In about a half hour I couldn't move my fingers.
Okay, here's where fear meets logic....
I was thinking, okay my hand probably got infected with "something" that requires antibiotic. Or, it's just swelling because of the the trauma. My main thinking was, what do I do in case I have to go the the ER so they don't give me a shot? Simple. I will start taking antibiotic pills I have at home and if I wind up going there I'll simply tell them I've been on one for a few days..... So I put myself on Azithromyacin. I have 5 different ones to choose from and I Googled which one would be the best.
Okay so a day goes by and I wake up the next day and surprise, my hand is swelled more! My worst nightmare. I spoke to a few people and we all agreed I should go to the ER. I went with a girlfriend. Immediately they took this seriously and explained to me that CAT bites are worse then ANY OTHER ANIMAL! Just my luck!
They said they are going to give me 2 antibiotics. Mmmmmm....Okay, before I could ask about them I instantly said to myself, no way am I taking 2 shots in the butt. Nope. Ill have surgery before I take any shots in the butt. Weird but true. The nurse explained, before I had a chance to protest, that they would be giving them to me intravenously. Sought of like jump starting the antibiotic in pills they would give me. They didn't care that I was already on Azithromyacin. I'm okay with those needles. I don't mind taking blood or intravenous. Bring it on. So I was happy.....FOR A MOMENT....
Then they asked, when my last Tetanus shot was? (100 years ago)..... Okay now here's the moment of truth. I thought to myself, I already dodged a bullet and didn't have to get any shots in my butt. So should I at least compromise and take a tetanus shot? The answer I gave would determine the outcome. So then I said to the nurse (who was SUPER cute) will you be giving me the shot? She said yes. I said, "okay well it's been so long I cant remember." BINGO, She says I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I am going to be giving you a Tetanus Shot then. Now I am happy and nervous..... She's setting up the IV's and it takes time. I'm waiting for that moment where she picks up the syringe. My last decent moment on earth....lol It takes forever and shes simply not picking up any syringe. Nor do I see one. This part sucked. I'm on the first antibiotic and I'm waiting and waiting......
Suddenly she says, okay I'm going to give you the shot now. I mean seriously, from childhood memories this is the moment you wish you were anywhere else. Jesus take me now! NOW I see the syringe! To make matters worse, we're debating which arm! You mean which direction am I going to cry in? We debate the usage of each arm. I write with my right arm but do a lot with my left. I don't know! We decided on my left arm. The same arm I got them as a kid!
Now to many reading this it may sound much to do about nothing, but trust me, when you had bad childhood experiences, this is Nightmare on Elm Street!!!!!!! This is what they based the movie on! So she comes around and wipes my right arm with alcohol. I said to her, listen you're very cute so I figure if someone is gonna hurt me, might as well be a cute person! She laughed. Suddenly, the girl I came with says wait! I wanna see! And she moves around the table! She is so lucky I was petrified or I woulda killed her! I'm very happy she wants to see me get my arm stuck with a long needle!!!! GRRRRRR
The next thing I know, she gives me the shot. I said wtf? Its over? She said yes. I am not kidding you, I never even felt her touch my skin! I said no way! She said yup..... Okay now I've been lucky but this is too lucky. I told her I felt zero. No needle. No medicine. So she says to me "don't speak too fast. You WILL feel the medicine." Almost as soon as she said that my arm began to pound....and POUND....BIG TIME! Suddenly I said, OMG, owwwwwwwww!!!!!!! WTF. Well yes it did wind up hurting a whole lot and for the next 3 days. And yes, it was bad for the first day. I almost couldn't raise my arm in the hospital! What a shame. I never felt anything and then BOOM PAIN!!!!!!!!!!!
It took a few hours for the intravenous to be done and I took my own intravenous out. My hand took about 3 days to go down. My arm stopped hurting after 3 days. And I lived happily ever after.....
UNTIL, a freak thing happened and I need 2 more shots in the arm, much worse then a Tetanus shot. One of them I got today and my arm is on fire!!!!!!!!!!
But that's for another time....This is the first of 3 unexpected shots I got in the past month!!!!!!
This better be the end of all this NOW!!!!!
