 In my youth the instruction to pull down my pants and bend over for a shot always meant going across the receptionist's lap and I continued to observe that dread routine well into adolescence. Embarrassing though it was to have the girl watch me injected back there, I consoled myself with the thought that, as it was part of her job, she doubtless saw many other boys jabbed in the bare bottom. I was therefore bemused on one occasion in my early teens when the girl was clearly surprised to see me drop trousers, pull down pants and bend over her lap at the feared news of a shot. It was only when I was bare-bottomed across her lap that I realised the reason for her reaction - she wasn't a medical receptionist, just a temporary secretary filling in on the usual receptionist's day off! Knowing that I was probably the only boy she had ever seen get a shot like that made it my most embarrassing ever injection.
