Even as I child I was never afraid of injections for the pain. What terrified me was the embarrassment of having to drop trousers, pull pants all the way down and bend over the receptionist's lap for her to watch me get them in the bare bottom. Far from fearing the needle itself, it was several years before I even knew what was really happening - until then I had been encouraged to think what I felt was the receptionist pinching me back there.

As an adult, the bare-bottomed anticipation is still the most traumatic part of injection experiences for me. Bending over with trousers and pants down while the nurse prepares my injections out of sight makes me incredibly apprehensive. Although alone with the nurse, there is always the risk (sometimes realised) of the receptionist coming in to witness my humiliation even if not from across her lap. By the time I feel the alcohol swab I am about to burst with anxiety - so much so that the shot itself comes as a relief, no matter how painful.
