At age 9 I had been really ill with gastroenteritis for nearly two weeks,from drinking contaminated water. As I recovered,I became very constipated which resulted in my first ever 1 quart warm soapywater enema with the enema bag.A few days later the Pediatrician showed up at the house He said I had to have a shot in the butt.I was scared silly.I had a very sensitive/fairskinned,small muscularly rounded bottom.The Doctor told me to pull my p.j.'s down (I was lying in my bed) "all the way down".He had me put a pillow underneath me.I was really embarrassed.He told me "this is going to sting some". He had a hypodermic syringe that had a 3/4" diameter barrel and a really long thin needle.I just buried my face in the other pillow.The Doctor like darted that hypo into my really tender bottom.It felt like a wasp sting first,then it burned.Good grief it hurt.He darted my right buttock with it.It hurt and burned for quite awhile.I hollered a real good OW when it went in too.

Richard, do you know what medicine the doctor injected into your behind? Of course with children, there is no fat for the needle to penetrate before it reaches the muscle. This makes both the needle going in as well as the medicine hurt children even more than adults. I once asked my Mother why shots hurt so badly. She said it’s because the medicine is spreading and moving the muscle inside of my behind around. Besides the fact that children are frightened out of their minds with just the thought of having a long silver color needle attached to a clear plastic devise that they can see the color of the medicine and know it's going to be pushed through that long needle into their behind.
