Subject: Injections for spinal pain relief

I haven’t seen spinal injections mentioned in any recent posts on this forum so will contribute my recent experience. I am an older male (62) and have been diagnosed with spinal stenosis, a degenerative condition affecting parts of the spinal skeletal area. Slipping off of an icy porch about three years and landing on the concrete sidewalk below accelerated my problem to some extent. Recently, I have taken extra strength Tylenol several times daily for relief. My orthopedic doctor referred me to a pain management doctor who does spinal injections using steroid medications. His process involves using fluoroscopy to identify the spinal area where the injection will be given to inject the med directly into the area where it will provide relief.

This week, I received my second injection in about a month. The office setup is similar to that of an outpatient surgery center. I was given one of the backless gowns for the first injection & asked to remove my shirt and under shirt. I was able to keep on my pants, underwear. And footwear. When I was taken into the fluoroscopy room, I had to step up to lie down on what looked much like an X-ray exam table. There were pillows for my stomach and for my upper chest to raise my head off the table. As I climbed onto the table, a nurse lowered my underwear shorts so that the waistband was low enough to expose 2-3 inches of my butt crack (or that’s what it felt like). She held the waist of my pants at the same height until I was prone on the table. Betadine was applied to my lower back and the hip area just above the butt crack prior to an injection of lidocaine. I was warned ‘big stick’ before the jab & yes, it was a painful jab for 2-3 seconds before the pain level receded somewhat. Then, I was told the lidocaine was injected followed by the actual steroid medicine. It felt like whatever syringe was in the tissue was being wiggled around for 7-8 seconds. Then, the syringe was removed and more betadine was applied to clean the area before a Band-Aid strip was applied. The whole process took no more than five minutes and then I was allowed to rearrange my clothing. On the second visit this week, I kept my outer shirt & t-shirt on. The nurse just folded the garments up out of the way. Then I was ushered back to my cubicle to wait for 15 minutes observation prior to being released.

Has anyone else had similar experience with this type of procedure? Oh yes, I have experienced significant relief from the back pain that had become part of my daily routine with the only variable being the time of day when I was take the first dose of pain reliever.
