I just took my daughter for her yearly sports physical and she got the surprise of her life when the doctor asked if her shots were current. I had mentioned to the doctor that she would be a senior and he said that tetanus and meningitis were required for students entering the 7th and 12th grade and he had asked if she had ever received the HPV series. After looking at her chat he discovered that she had not received the hepatitis a series, hepatitis b series, a second mmr shot nor had she had chicken pox. My daughter was in tears when he told her that they could give her all shots today since we were there. I agreed despite much debate from my daughter.

The nurse came back with a tray of seven shots and she also brought another nurse with her to give the shots. She received three shots (Tetanus, Hepatitis B and MMR) in her left arm and three shots (Hepatitis A, Meningitis and Chicken Pox) in her right arm. To make things quick and easy for her both nurses injected her one at a time. Next was the HPV shot and she had to get that in her butt which she didn't like very much at all and I can't blame her because I have had shots in my butt and I know how they can be and I know that shot had to hurt because the needle was huge but I didn't let her know as I hid my reaction from her. As the nurse uncapped the needle I told her everything would be fine and tried to take her mind off the shot but as the nurse uncapped the needle and cleansed her bare bottom I could tell that she was about to cry, then the nurse stuck the needle in her butt and my daughter let out a little yell and once she injected the medicine the tears began to flow.

We go back in one month for three more shots and in six months for four more shots. She is doing fine right now she has soreness in her arms and she has a very nice bruise on her butt from the HPV shot.

The exam was nothing just your typical sports physical exam. He listened to her heart, checked her breathing, reflexes, etc. Our school system is not strict on shots here if you had them before kindergarten then you are good the rest of the way. This is a new law that was put in place here and she just feel into that category. She is holding up pretty well just a little soreness still and she is not looking forward to going back in a month especially for the HPV shot

My daughters also have started the Gardasil series and the first was done at their physicals. Both had on exam gowns, bare underneath, and when it was time had to stand and lean onto the table. The female nurse exposed their bottoms fully rubbed alcohol on a cheek then said, "ready" and administered the shot. Within seconds each one was in tears, flinching big time, and soon rubbing the wounded cheek. They return for the follow up shot in two weeks.

To all of you dear moms who watched your daughters getting buttocks injections; do you know what gauge needles were used and how long they were. I recently saw a youtube post regarding a news article I'd heard about a few years back, where it apparently came to light that patients requiring injections that needed to be given in the buttocks; showed that because of the skin's thickness and fat tissue, many needles were not effectively getting to the muscle that needed to be gotten to, basically rendering the shot to be ineffective.

Shots no matter whether in the arm or butt can be quite unpleasant. My daughter (15) had her physical, new doctor, and was required to remove all and put on a short paper gown, which embarassed her completely as her bottom was prominently on display. She was exposed at various points throughout the physical includig a posture exam whereby she was bare facing her young female doctor. After that, she was told to get up on the table, turn over, a rectal temp was taken while the nurse prepared two injections that were given in her butt. She was in tears as soon as her cheeks were rubbed with alcohol and gasped with each pinch of the needle.

Why'd your daughter have her temperature obtained, rectally? And what was her reaction to having it taken that way? I know shots MIGHT be expected to be administered in the buttocks during a physical, and can certainly bring a teen girl and boy, too, I guess to either yell out as the needle is injected or even bring on a scream accompanied by tears. But the temperature taking had to be a rather humiliating experience for your daughter. Did she or you know this was the doctor's protocol for vital signs? And who did the actual temperature taking? The doctor or her nurse?
