I agree with you, Márcia. Poems and songs can engage students (especially teenagers). I also believe that there is no harm in teaching the phonetic chart and its symbols. Even though some learners might see them as 'monster' or 'aliens' they can be, in my opinion, great friends in times of need (especially when studying on their own).

Sometimes we know how to spell words and to understand their meanings. But when it comes to speaking, pronunciation may be a hard job to deal with. And if it fails, how can we keep the basic form of communication, i.e., the spoken one? It just doesn't happen.

Since good dictionaries provide their entries with the phonetic symbols, I think it is essential to elaborate activities which draw students attention to the importance of pronunciation and its written representation.

Let's keep this in mind when we create our task to teach English sounds.
