Subject: Speaking for myself as an independent Spiritualist

Speaking for myself as an independent Spiritualist who has already passed his fourscore years and ten, I would say that we as eternal spirits select a time and place to come to live on earth as human beings, maybe in the stone age, bronze age, iron age, early civilization, in the classical ages, in Biblical times, in the middle ages, in colonial times or in modern times or sometime in the future before or after the next ice age or before the sun becomes a red dwarf, at which time we will have to look in other solar systems or galaxies, or find other realities to inhabit. We may or may not have chosen lives in several different eras, to reincarnate in groups, within a specific culture or with a few special people. Wherever we live and at whatever time, we all come from a life in spirit, no matter what religion, sect, cult or culture we belong to on earth. We may sample many different belief systems, or stay within one, but we are essentially first and foremost spirit. So, as all the – isms and -ologies, organizations and associations, buildings and cities, villages and settlements, tribes and empires come and go, since all is change here, we as spirits have an eternal yet evolving center, where no experience is forgotten. We can develop our gifts and accomplishments while we are here, helping others on the path by sharing our knowledge. That is the best we can do. There is no need to become despondent if things don’t go our way, depressed by the pull of the personal will’s [or ego’s] thwarted desires. Furthering one cause or another is not so important as seeking the truth and becoming the best person we can be, a light in the world no matter what the situation, acting always unselfishly and without prejudice. When we look at the billions of years over which our planet and solar system has evolved, we realize how wonderful it is to be here, now, alive and fully conscious in this present moment, aware of the world around us and within us, and of all it has to offer us and what we can do in return. Then, in addition, we have a far greater life to return to, in spirit. It doesn’t matter whether we have this long evolutionary awareness of existence or a more local involvement with our present lifespan, in one country and one locality without any knowledge beyond it. Back in the world of spirit, when we pass, we will soon attune to the greater awareness, if we are ready and able. I would think it best to be aware of the three perspectives – the long evolutionary view of existence, our day-to-day experience, and our eternal contact with the world of spirit. There’s that concept of a trinity again! In our personal everyday life each one of us has a different concept of God. To some he is the father god, the caring loving personal authority who looks after our every need, like a benevolent Santa Claus, an ever- watchful guide and mentor. For others God is a principle, an absolute law of life under whom all things are ordained in their rightful hierarchy. For others yet again, God is the intelligent designer, the Cosmic Mind who lovingly creates different realities and experiences and takes part in their development as he lives in every created form. For others, the Goddess is the Mother of all creation, all-embracing, neither judgmental nor dominating, but casting dominion over all things. For Spiritualists, I would think that from the evidnce and outcome of their mediumship, personal contact with the world of spirit and our source of being comes through the guides and helpers who watch over our lives from a point on the spiritual planes that is close to earth. It is only when we are done with our earthly lives that we move up a little closer to the all-embracing love-intelligence of the Great Spirit, or in Eastern terms, the still hub of the wheel, the essence, the center of life, the Tao or Brahman. If our religions could agree on some common factor in their concepts of the deity or essence or source of being, our disputes would disappear in a flash, and it would be a matter of working out practical economic and political solutions to our troubles and divisions. Spiritually we all come from a common undivided source. Hindu, Muslim, Taoist, Buddhist, Christian,Bahaiist, Atheist, Pagan, Spiritist, Spiritualist, Agnostic, Scientist, Materialist, you-name-it-ist, we are all one. Just as a sick body is a divided body, fighting within itself, so is our society very sick at the moment because of its divisions, bitter feuds and the name-calling. Peace will come as the body is allowed to heal. So Unity is the first step towards peace of mind, body and spirit. That’s what I think and feel.
