I knew Jimmy Pardue when I was just a kid growing up in North Wilkesboro. It was before he became a Grand National driver. I often watched him building and tuning his quarter- midget race cars right across from the old Wilkes YMCA, at Motor Service and Sales. Jimmy raced those cars with great success, and he always answered all my dumb questions. He explained and demonstrated top-dead center to me, and he knew I wanted to drive one of his creations.
So, one Sunday afternoon in June of 1960, we boys drove to the dirt track on Old 60, and Jimmy let me drive some laps. It was a very wet track. The idea was to run flat out through the turns in a four wheel drift. I have never been so covered with mud in my life. Jimmy laughed. I was in heaven, where I know Jimmy is now.
