Aquino sees passage of all 13 priority bills by 2013

MANILA, Philippines — President Aquino expressed optimism on Thursday that his administration’s 13 priority bills will be passed by both chambers of Congress before the end of the current Congress by 2013.

Mr. Aquino made the remarks amid the seeming preoccupation of both the Senate and the House of Representatives in the impeachment of Chief Justice Renato Corona.

“Our expectations are that priority measures will still be passed before the current Congress ends,” President Aquino said in a text message relayed through Undersecretary Abigail Valte, his deputy spokesperson.

Among the priority measures the administration submitted to Congress is the Responsible Parenthood, Reproductive Health and Population and Development Bill.

Mr. Aquino was responding to a question on whether he would rally his allies in Congress, especially those who have not been directly involved in the impeachment trial, to attend to their legislative duties.

Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman earlier warned that the government’s focus on Corona’s impeachment was already affecting urgent legislative work.
