Overwhelming case for the RH bill

WOMEN gather in front of the Commission on Elections building in Intramuros, Manila, to commemorate the Filipino women’s 74th year of exercising the right to vote and to push for the passage of the RH bill. GRIG C. MONTEGRANDE
To its critics, the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health (RH) bill is the devilish product of a foreign conspiracy. The principal plotters in this conspiracy are three: the United Nations, the goal of which is allegedly to legalize abortion; the United States, which seeks to control the populations of developing countries in line with the so-called Kissinger Doctrine; and “Big Pharma,” or the Western transnational firms that stand to make tremendous profits from the sale of contraceptives.
In this scenario painted by anti-RH groups, the United Nations, United States and Big Pharma have somehow managed to bribe, intimidate or fool people like President Aquino, Senators Pia Cayetano and Miriam Santiago, Rep. Edcel Lagman and the over 100 authors of the RH bill in the House of Representatives to do their bidding.
How it has come about that some of the strongest critics of the United States and transnational corporations have been transmogrified into the latter’s stooges is unexplained, prompting some wags to liken the anti-RH plot line to that of the Hollywood film “Invasion of the Body Snatchers.”

MANILA, Philippines – While the Church, politicians and pretty much the entire populace remain divided about the Reproductive Health Bill, Finnish broadcasting company Yle makes its stance clear.
The group’s one-hour documentary titled “Eyewitness: Church and Condom” encapsulates what would make the bill’s proponents cringe and its critics nod in assent. In it, the Philippines is seen as a shining example of a country that’s heavily resistant to the “changes and benefits” that could be had from the bill.
Aired in a primetime slot in Finland on Oct. 10, the docu helmed by Finnish investigative journalist Eero Ojanperä featured anti-RH bill senator Gringo Honasan, as well as senator Pia Cayetano, who harbors a pro stance on the intriguing issue. Each laid down their arguments supporting their view.
In the documentary, Cayetano argued that the Church’s idea of having a “young and growing population as a resource” was purely ridiculous.
Meanwhile, to represent the common citizenry; street people, church reps, health population workers, and a United Nations representative were also asked to weigh in on the subject.
“The current population growth causes high pressure to the whole society, from schooling to housing and food and water supplies. People have also become export products, and even today, one in 10 of the Filipino works abroad,” Ojanperä said in the introduction.
“The Catholic Church is stubborn and even holier than the Pope, it does not accept any form of birth control, even condoms,” the commentator added.
Aside from pointing out the hurdles faced by the bill, the report presented a couple of predictions as to the country's future should the "overpopulation" persist. More, the creators of the documentary cited that it’s no mere coincidence that the world’s seven billionth baby turned out to be born in Manila.
“At this rate, the Philippines is doomed to poverty, especially for the ever growing number of children per family in the slums that number to a dozen or so,” noted the documentary.
