SEN. Pia Cayetano yesterday said she would force the reproductive health bill to a vote after introducing amendments to the measure.

Cayetano made the remark after Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said the controversial measure might not be passed this year.

At the House, Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. rallied members to finally put the measure to a vote.

“Let the chips fall where they may,” he told the House in plenary during the opening of the third regular session.

Belmonte said voting on the RH bill is long been overdue. “It has been discussed from every possible perspective by advocates and opponents alike not only in this Congress but in past congresses,” he said.

President Aquino, in his State of the Nation Address, mentioned the need to pass the measure.

Cayetano said proponents of the bill have already explained every provision of the proposed measure and that the committee on health and demography would just present amendments to the proposal “and after that, we vote.”

The Senate completed the period of interpellation before Congress went on sine die adjournment last month.

Cayetano also said it is an “embarrassment to the Filipino people” if senators would say they are not ready to vote on the measure.

“They can make their individual amendments and then make a vote. How difficult is that? It’s an embarrassment to the Filipino people to say that ‘we are not ready.’ Ibig sabihin, hindi tayo nag-aaral, hindi tayo nagbabasa,” she said.

Sen. Francis Escudero agreed there is a need to vote on the bill which he said has long been pending.

“One way or the other each and every member of the Senate and the House should take a stand on this matter,” he said. – JP Lopez and Wendell Vigilia
