Another argument for RH bill

SUPPORTERS of the reproductive health bill are again calling on lawmakers to pass the measure which they said would help prevent premature births.
Congress resumes session today after at least a month’s break.
Benjamin de Leon, president of the Forum on Family Planning and Development (The Forum), said premature births are a result of “unplanned and mistimed pregnancy” and can be prevented if women are provided adequate information.
Last week, a United Nations report, “Born Too Soon: The Global Action Report on Preterm Birth,” said some 15 million babies worldwide are being born too early. Of the number, at least a million die shortly after birth while others suffer some type of lifelong physical, neurological, or educational disability.
The UN report ranked the Philippines eighth among countries with the highest number of preterm births, at 348,900.
Other countries with high numbers are India (3,519,100), China (1,172,300), Nigeria (773,600), Pakistan (748,100), Indonesia (675,700), United States (517,400), and Bangladesh (424,100).
The RH bill remains pending despite being identified as among the priority bills of the Aquino government. – Gerard Naval

Philippines seen undergoing rapid urbanization

THE Hong Kong-Shanghai Banking Company (HSBC) sees the number of Filipinos in urban areas increasing dramatically.

“Over the coming ten years, Asia’s cities will grow by some 400 million people—well ahead of the entire population of the United States. By 2030, the number of urbanites will have grown by almost 750 million. Evidently, plenty more bricks, water-pipes, and shopping malls are needed,” said HSBC economist Frederick Neumann in his research paper.

He belied that urbanization in the Philippines was delayed during the last decade.

“Cities in the Philippines are growing almost as rapidly as in China. The difference is that the total population is increasing at a fast clip as well, which is why the urbanization rate isn’t moving up as rapidly as elsewhere. The information is misleading,” the economist said.

“This shouldn’t discourage investors and companies, however: the number of eager urban consumers is clearly growing rapidly as well and infrastructure is urgently needed here, too. The rate of increase of the urban population is thus the best. Measure to track: on this score, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam are seeing urban populations swell at similar rates as China,” Neumann added.

Citing United Nations estimates, he said that another 25 million people would live in Philippine cities through 2030, or the size of Taiwan’s current population.

“Lots more people, in short not just born in cities but also on the move. Since urban areas are also where Asia’s real economic power lies, this will mean plenty of addition to GDP,” he said.

An indicator of economic performance, GDP refers to gross domestic product, which is the amount of final goods and services produced in the country.

HSBC earlier said that it forecasts a 4.4 GDP growth for the Philippines this year before picking up to 5 percent in 2013. Economic growth fell to 3.7 percent last year from the 7.4 percent in 2010.
